FreshDirect leads grocery delivery race in sales, Peapod wins per basket

A report released by 1010data compared the performances of grocery delivery companies FreshDirect, Peapod, Amazon Fresh and Instacart through the first 10 months of 2016. The report's findings included the following:

  • FreshDirect leads in sales, and has more than twice the share of Peapod, the next largest company in the study.
  • Instacart and Amazon Fresh are growing at a much faster pace than FreshDirect and Peapod. Year-over-year growth for each company is 72% (Instacart), 43% (Amazon Fresh), and 7% (FreshDirect and Peapod).
  • Peapod shoppers spent the most per basket ($147 per trip) compared to FreshDirect ($105), Instacart ($98) and Amazon Fresh ($84). 1010data believes this is in part due to Peapod's lower delivery fees for orders above $100.
  • Shoppers order more frequently from Amazon Fresh and FreshDirect (once every two weeks) than they do from Instacart (once every 20 days).
So, you decide who's winning!

FreshDirect expands to more Philly suburbs; adds 90 new zip codes

Internet grocer FreshDirect announced yesterday that it has expanded service to more than 90 new zip codes that range from the Philadelphia area all the way to Long Island in New York. FreshDirect entered the Philadelphia market in October 2012 in limited areas, and expanded just three months ago to many surrounding suburban counties.

Most of the new zip codes are in New Jersey, covering eight counties in Northern New Jersey as well as Camden and Gloucester counties in Southern New Jersey.

FreshDirect CEO Jason Ackerman said that suburban growth is outpacing urban growth, prompting the expedited growth outside of New York City and Philadelphia.

Fresh Direct expanding online grocery service to suburbs

Online grocer Fresh Direct, which introduced its service to a limited area in Philadelphia last October, said earlier this week it has expanded into parts of Montgomery and Delaware Counties, and will soon provide grocery delivery for portions of Chester, Bucks, Camden, Burlington and Mercer Counties.

According to the company, the demand for its service prompted a faster rollout than originally planned.

Online grocer FreshDirect coming to the Philly market

Exactly one year ago today I blogged about Peapod by Giant's entry into the Greater Philadelphia market (Peapod by Giant online grocery shopping to serve Greater Philly).  Today I'm writing about FreshDirect.com, although I just gave the lead sentence to its biggest competitor!

FreshDirect, which has served the New York metro area for the last decade, will officially launch in Philadelphia on Monday, October 1. The online service provides produce, meat, seafood and deli items, pastries and breads, organic foods, coffee and pre-made meals. The company's online store front opened earlier this week and began accepting orders for delivery starting on October 1.

The launch only includes eight center city zip codes but the company says it plans to expand throughout the region in 2013.

FreshDirect requires a $30 minimum order and a delivery fee in the $6.99 - $8.99 range, although new customers can lock in unlimited free deliveries for 60 days when signing up for the service.
