The state of Delaware is slated to get its first Wegmans supermarket. According to WDEL.com and Pettinaro Development, the store would be located at Barley Mill Plaza in Greenville if approved by New Castle County Council.
If approved, Wegmans would be an integral part of a multi-use plan that includes office, retail, apartments and townhouses.

Weis Markets launching same-day delivery via Shipt
Weis Markets announced that it will rollout same-day delivery via Shipt beginning on September 6 in 11 markets throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Shipt, based in Alabama and owned by Target, said the rollout will give nearly 2.6 million households access to products delivered from Weis in as soon as one hour.
The same-day service will serve as another online option for Wies customers, as the supermarket chain already has its Weis 2 Go click-and-collect grocery service available at about 90 stores. Weis operates 2016 stores in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia.

The Fresh Market to close 15 stores
The Fresh Market announced yesterday that it plans to close 15 stores in nine states. None of the closings are in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware.
The closings are expected to take place in the next two to four weeks. Four of the stores are in Illinois, two in Georgia, two in Virginia, and one each in Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Tennessee.
There are currently five Fresh Market stores in Pennsylvania, two in New Jersey and one in Delaware.
"Over the last eight months, our company has been executing a turnaround plan, and we've seen great progress," said CEO Larry Appel. "However, for a variety of reasons unique to each retail location, that progress is not evenly distributed and, as a result, we have decided to close these long-term under-performing stores."
The Fresh Market, which currently operates 176 stores in 24 states, has had several stores closings in recent years as competition - both online and brick-and-mortar - has adversely impacted sales.

Kenny ShopRites giving bonuses as a result of tax reform
Kenny Family ShopRites, which operates six supermarkets in Delaware, announced earlier this month that as a result of the new tax reform legislation, it would give $150 to 1,000 of its non-management workers, and invest $150,000 in employee training and development.
According to President and CEO Christopher Kenny, "Our ability to provide bonuses and training to our employees demonstrates the far-reaching implications of this tax reform."

Fresh Direct expanding online grocery service to suburbs
Online grocer Fresh Direct, which introduced its service to a limited area in Philadelphia last October, said earlier this week it has expanded into parts of Montgomery and Delaware Counties, and will soon provide grocery delivery for portions of Chester, Bucks, Camden, Burlington and Mercer Counties.
According to the company, the demand for its service prompted a faster rollout than originally planned.

Three Super Fresh stores to close in NJ
A&P has announced it will close three New Jersey Super Fresh stores in January. The stores are located in Evesham (Marlton), Haddon Township and Plainsboro.
Since New Jersey-based A&P filed for bankruptcy protection nearly two years ago, several of its banners have closed in the state, including many Pathmark stores and a Super Fresh. Stores have been closed elsewhere as well. The company emerged from bankruptcy as a private company earlier this year.
According to Super Fresh's website, there are currently 25 stores operating, including the three slated for closure. 12 are in Pennsylvania, six in New Jersey, five in Delaware and two in Maryland.
Overall, A&P operates more than 300 stores under the A&P, Food Basics, The Food Emporium, Pathmark, Super Fresh and Waldbaum's banners.

Bernie Kenny turning Delaware ShopRite business over to son Chris
After more than 50 years in the supermarket business and 12 years as the chief executive of Delaware Supermarkets Inc., Bernard Kenny is stepping down. His son, Chris Kenny, will become CEO while Bernard will remain active as chairman.
Delaware Supermarkets currently has five stores under the ShopRite (Wakefern) brand, and has a 15% share of the supermarket business in New Castle County, Delaware.
Chris has been with the business since 2004 and has served as director of human resources, general counsel and CFO.

Wawa signs leases, plans to enter Florida market
According to the Orlando Business Journal, Wawa has signed "more than 10" leases in the Orlando, Florida market, and the retailer has indicated it will open as many as 100 stores in the state.
According to a Wawa regional real estate manager, site work on the first set of stores will begin in the next month or two, with openings taking place next summer.
Currently Wawa has 588 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Fuel is offered at 298 of these locations (that's more than half for those keeping score).
I have previously written about Walmart's entry into the convenience store/gas arena and their roll-out of up to 350 stores per year, but I doubt the Greater Philadelphia area is high on their list because of Wawa's domination here. It'll be interesting to see, however, if the Big Ws battle it out in the Sunshine state!

Giant ready to open first Philly store
Giant is seeing increases in sales and market share in the Delaware Valley, and now they are preparing for the opening of their first supermarket in Philadelphia. The 74,000 square foot store will open Wednesday at 2550 Grant Avenue in Northeast Philly, and will include on-site gas and a pharmacy. It will be open 24 hours a day.
According to Giant, the store will have 275 employees, both full- and part-time.
With the new store, Giant will have 48 stores in the five-county area that includes Philadelphia, Montgomery, Bucks, Delaware and Chester counties. According to Food Trade News, these stores averaged approximately $32.5 million in sales in the last year.

A&P Seeks to Sell 25 Super Fresh Stores in MD, DE and DC
The Supermarket News story below reports that A&P will sell 25 Super Fresh stores in the next two months. The bulk of the stores (22 of the 25) are in Maryland, primarily in the Baltimore market, while two are in Washington D.C. and one is in Delaware.
According to the story, A&P said Super Fresh stores on the Maryland and Delaware shores would stay with the company, as would its Super Fresh stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
