The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) announced winning bidders yesterday for 37 "zombie" liquor licenses, and Giant Food Stores won 11 of them. Interested parties had to submit sealed bids for the licenses, which had expired.
The Giant stores in Southeastern Pennsylvania with winning bids include Bristol Township (Bucks County), Coatesville and East Caln (Chester), and Narberth and Skippack (Montgomery). The Narberth and Skippack licenses sold for $491,300 and $526,000, respectively. According to Philly.com, the selling price for a license in Montgomery County last year was about $250,000.
Convenience store chain Sheetz bought 15 of the licenses.
The PLCB said that about 1,200 licenses have expired since 2000 and will be sold through auctions in the months and years ahead.

Nonprofit supermarket set to open in Chester this weekend
Fare & Square, a nonprofit grocery store created by Philabundance, also a nonprofit organization, plans to open this Saturday in Chester, PA, a community declared as a food desert by the federal government. The government defines a food desert as a low-income area lacking ready access to healthy food.
The $7 million store is the brain child of Philabundance Executive Director Bill Clark, who said it's nearly impossible to buy a head of lettuce in any of Chester's 100 corner stores. Chester's population is approximately 33,000.
Financial help for the nonprofit store has been provided by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Delaware Valley Regional Economic Development Fund, the City of Chester, and others.
Although anyone can shop in the 16,000 square foot store, shoppers with annual incomes equal to or less than twice the federal poverty level of $23,000 for a family of four can accrue store credits of seven percent of their purchase. The credits can be applied towards future purchases.
Chester, once a bustling shipbuilding town, has struggled in the years after World War II. As of Saturday, the city will have the designation of being home to the only nonprofit supermarket in the country.

Nonprofit grocery store to open in Chester, PA
Hunger relief organization Philabundance will open Fare & Square, a nonprofit grocery store, next spring in Chester, PA. The store will provide greater food access to local residents, who live in one of 35 food deserts in the Delaware Valley, according to the USDA.
According to the organization, Fare & Square will carry nutritious food staples, with a focus on fresh produce, meats, dairy, seafood and frozen foods. The 13,000 square foot store will be located at the site of the last supermarket within Chester's city limits, which closed 11 years ago.

Giant ready to open first Philly store
Giant is seeing increases in sales and market share in the Delaware Valley, and now they are preparing for the opening of their first supermarket in Philadelphia. The 74,000 square foot store will open Wednesday at 2550 Grant Avenue in Northeast Philly, and will include on-site gas and a pharmacy. It will be open 24 hours a day.
According to Giant, the store will have 275 employees, both full- and part-time.
With the new store, Giant will have 48 stores in the five-county area that includes Philadelphia, Montgomery, Bucks, Delaware and Chester counties. According to Food Trade News, these stores averaged approximately $32.5 million in sales in the last year.
