Walmart opened its new Intelligent Retail Lab last week inside a 50,000 square foot Neighborhood Market grocery store in Levittown, NY, which is on Long Island. According to the company, the store will test new, innovative ideas with the help of artificial intelligence-enabled cameras, interactive displays and a massive data center (in full view of customers).
Plans call for the IRL team to use real-time information to explore efficiencies that will allow associates to know when to restock products, and make sure shopping carts are available and registers are open. In addition, customers can access interactive, educational displays, and find answers to commonly asked questions.
According to a Walmart executive, the IRL is meant to improve the shopping experience for customers, and also improve the employee experience.
"The technology has been built to improve associates' jobs, the make their jobs more interesting, and to help them alleviate some of the mundane tasks. AI can enhance their skillset in a very rapidly changing world."

FreshDirect expands to more Philly suburbs; adds 90 new zip codes
Internet grocer FreshDirect announced yesterday that it has expanded service to more than 90 new zip codes that range from the Philadelphia area all the way to Long Island in New York. FreshDirect entered the Philadelphia market in October 2012 in limited areas, and expanded just three months ago to many surrounding suburban counties.
Most of the new zip codes are in New Jersey, covering eight counties in Northern New Jersey as well as Camden and Gloucester counties in Southern New Jersey.
FreshDirect CEO Jason Ackerman said that suburban growth is outpacing urban growth, prompting the expedited growth outside of New York City and Philadelphia.

A&P close to a sale of its Food Emporium chain
According to a story in Crain's New York Business, the sale of A&P's 16-store Food Emporium chain in Manhattan is imminent. As of late last month, the investment banking firm Duff & Phelps was soliciting final bids from buyers, including Kings Food Markets, a 24-store chain that operates in New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut, that wants several of the Food Emporium stores.
Gristedes, which operates approximately 30 stores in Manhattan and surrounding areas, submitted a bid for the entire chain, but it appears A&P is leaning towards a sale to multiple buyers.
The Crain's story also reports that the union representing some of Food Emporium's 1,100 employees is suing A&P to stop a sale to buyers who would not honor its current labor contracts, although such a buyer would only have to honor the contracts if A&P made it a condition of the sale.
A&P, officially known as the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, also owns Pathmark, Super Fresh, Waldbaum's and Food Basics grocery stores.
