Instacart said earlier this month that it will "wind down" its nearly five-year old partnership with Whole Foods. Instacart plans to lay off 243 of its 1,415 Whole Foods personal shoppers. However, the company said it expects to place more than 75% of its affected personal shoppers in similar jobs at other retailers in their area.
Industry experts had anticipated this move ever since Amazon purchased Whole Foods in 2017. As of June 2018, all Whole Foods stores in the U.S. were connected to Amazon Prime, and Prime Now delivery is currently available at Whole Foods stores in 63 cities. In addition, Prime Now Pickup is offered at stores in 22 markets.
Despite losing the Whole Foods account, Instacart continues to expand, and currently works with more than 300 retailers. The click-and-collect Instacart Pickup program is expected to rollout soon to nearly 200 grocery stores in 25 metro markets.

Target continues to expand same-day and next-day delivery
Last month Target announced that it rolled out its Target Restock service nationwide, and that the company has expanded its Shipt same-day delivery service in six midwestern states.
Restock
According to Target, more than 75% of the U.S. population can order from an assortment of 35,000 items and have their "Restock box" delivered to their door the next day. Through the Restock service, customers can order food, home essentials and other consumer staples.
Customers can order as late as 7:00pm and have their boxes delivered the next day. Target fulfills the orders from shelves of nearby stores.
Shipt
With the planned addition of 12 million Midwest households, same-day delivery via Shipt, which Target acquired last December, will soon be available to more than 60 million households in more than 100 markets nationwide. Target expects the service to be in 180 markets - reaching 80 million households - by the end of this year.
Through Shipt, Target customers can get same-day delivery of more than 55,000 groceries, household essentials, electronics, toys, home and other items.
An annual Shipt membership provides free, same-day delivery on orders of more than $35. Members search and shop online, make special requests, select a one-hour delivery window, and pay for their order. Personal shoppers pick, bag and delivery the orders.

Walmart adding grocery delivery in 100+ markets
Walmart announced that it plans to expand its online grocery delivery service to more than 100 metro areas around the country. The company says the service will be available to more than 40 percent of U.S. households by year-end.
Currently Walmart's grocery delivery service is available in six markets, where customers can receive their orders the same day in some cases. The fee is $9.95 and the minimum order is $30.
According to reports, Walmart already employs more than 18,000 personal shoppers and will hire thousands more.
Walmart also offers online grocery pickup, where customers order groceries online and pick them up at stores without having to get out of their cars. This service is currently available in 1,200 stores throughout six markets, and the company plans to add the service to 1,000 more stores this year.
