Save-A-Lot planning six new PA/NJ stores
It was reported last month that Save-A-Lot, the discount grocer that Supervalu is looking to spin off, plans to open six new stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Two of these stores will open soon in Philadelphia, and one in Norristown, PA. The other locations are planned for Lebanon, PA, Pottstown, PA and Trenton, NJ.

Weis Markets to close on 3 Genuardi's stores next week
I've written before about Giant's plan to take over 16 Genuardi's stores (The Genuardi's list - sold, closing and still for sale...) and Weis Markets' acquisition of three Genuardi's locations (Weis to buy three PA Genuardi's stores), but not much has been said about when all these changes will take place.
One of the first actual dates I've seen (thanks to the May issue of Food Trade News) is June 11, when Weis Markets plans to close on the Conshohocken, Doylestown and Norristown stores. According to the report, the refurbished units should reopen within a week.
In the last couple months I have also heard that the Federal Trade Commission won't allow Giant to open all 16 of the stores it originally planned to acquire from Genuardi's. And last week I read in the same Food Trade News issue referenced above that Giant will get 15 stores, with the Newtown, PA location going to an independent operator.

Charles Genuardi, one of five brothers who ran family business, passes away at 102
Charles Genuardi, the oldest of the five Genuardi brothers who ran the family grocery business until 1990 when they transferred control to the next generation, died last Friday at the age of 102.
The family business traces back to 1920, when Charles' parents, Gaspare and Josephine, grew vegetables on a small farm in Norristown and delivered them by horse and wagon to their neighbors. In the 1930s, the family opened a corner store, and then a "superette," or small supermarket, in the 1940s in Jeffersonville (West Norriton).
The Genuardi's chain of stores was founded in 1954, and for 36 years the five brothers (four other siblings were not involved) developed the company into one of the largest and most respected independent supermarket businesses in the Delaware Valley.
Under the leadership of Charles' son, Charles A., the number of stores nearly doubled between 1990 and 2000, and in 2001 the company was sold to Safeway.
