Thanksgiving weekend produces record sales

Here's the skinny:


  • $52.4 billion - total sales for Thanksgiving weekend, a 16% increase over last year
  • 226 million - the number of people that went shopping over Thanksgiving weekend, a 6.6% increase over last year
  • $398.62 - average amount spent by shoppers
  • $479 million - web sales on Thanksgiving day, an 18% increase over last year
  • $816 million - web sales on Black Friday, a 26% increase
  • 2.3% - annualized rate at which consumer spending rose in the third quarter of the year - the fastest pace of 2011
  • 2.8% - estimated rate at which holiday sales will increase over last year
  • 5.2% - last year's holiday sales increase over the previous year
